I Found Myself in Running

Today’s daily dose of inspiration comes from MapMyRun member, Miranda Antcliff. We agree that signing up for a local race is the easiest way to kickstart your training.

Miranda Antcliff: “I have never regretted lacing up my tennis shoes”

August 2012 was my first 5K at the age of 32 with no training! My daughter’s friend’s mom had signed up for a race, and the lady she was planning on running with had backed out. She asked if I wanted to do it with her. Not knowing what I was getting myself into, I agreed. I have done workout videos here and there, but I always thought running was the dumbest thing you could do and I couldn’t run to the mailbox if I tried.

Being 5’2″, 130 lbs, and having 2 kids, I’ve never been overweight and never had to work to maintain my weight. The day of the race, I gained a respect for runners and what they train their body to do! Finishing the race was much harder than I expected. When I finished, I felt the “runner’s high” that I never knew existed. I was so tired and so sore but I felt a sense of accomplishment that I’d never felt. Surviving my first 5K inspired me to keep running. I bought real running shoes and actually looked forward to taking time to jog around the block.

I joined MapMyRun December 2012 and love how it motivates me. Seeing my routes and receiving the weekly summary every Monday is extremely motivational. My favorite feature of the app is the voice feedback I have set to report my pace every 1/2 mile. It helps me know where I’m at in my run and encourages me to know I’m on track with my speed.

I can honestly say that I found myself in running. Being a mom of 8 and 10 year-old girls, I felt proud to share this new “me” with them. In the last 16 months, I have done 11 5K’s, 2 10K’s, and a half marathon. My girls have done 6 5K’s with me as well as my husband, sister, & niece. I love the healthy lifestyle we can now share together and hopefully instill a healthy future for us all.

My 2014 goal is to run at least one 5k race each month. I will find a race in my area every month, register in advance online, and keep training. I enjoy contributing financially to the cause and also the time I committing to myself. I feel that I come back from a run inspired!

My advice to others looking to be more active is to just step out the door and give a jog your personal best. I do not have time or money to join a gym. I usually run around the block after my girls are in bed and I have completed all of my “mommy” duties. I enjoy taking the time to clear my head and enjoy the fresh air- even it’s it’s only 20 minutes! I have never regretted lacing up my tennis shoes.
