How To: Pair Your Heart Rate Monitor with MapMyRun

Whether your fitness goal is weight loss, maximizing performance or improving your overall health, heart rate training is the most effective way to track your intensity during a workout. Train smarter by pairing your heart rate strap with the MapMyRun app to get the most out of your workout. Below is a simple step-by-step process to get you set up.

First, you need a heart rate monitor – get one here that will work seamlessly with your iPhone 4s or iPhone 5.

Step 1. Moisten the oval sensor pads on the heart rate strap where they make contact with your skin. Put the heart rate strap on, with the plastic heart rate transmitter resting just below your sternum. Ladies, this should rest just below a sports bra.

Step 2. Within the app, click on the ‘Record’ button to begin.

Step 3. When the ‘Start Workout’ screen appears, scroll down until you can click on ‘Sensor Settings.’ Inside ‘Sensor Settings’ you will see a list of sensor types. Click on the ‘Heart Rate’ button.

Step 4. After clicking on ‘Heart Rate,’ this first screen will appear. Before clicking ‘Connect,’ MAKE SURE that your heart rate strap is being worn and that the sensor pads are moist and in contact with your chest. Once the connection has been made, you will be able to see your resting heart rate as shown. *Note – ensure your Bluetooth settings are enabled to pair successfully. The Bluetooth icon will light up once Bluetooth is enabled and connected (as shown below).

Step 5. Once you can see you heart rate, press the upper left button on the screen twice. The first time, as shown here, the button will read “Sensors”. The second time you will click the button titled “Workout”. This will bring you back to the Workout screen. You may then begin your workout by clicking on the “Start” button. Notice the yellow arrow points to an illuminated heart, indicating that the heart rate strap is connected to the application.

Step 6. After clicking ‘Start Workout,’ this is the screen that will appear. By clicking on the ‘Stats’ button, you are able to view your workout statistics. Included in your workout statistics is your current heart rate for your workout.
