Derrick Coleman Steps Up in a Big Way

Jake Kovalcik, a member of the MapMyFitness family, recently experienced the power of social media. After his twin daughters (both hearing impaired) saw a powerful commercial with Seattle Seahawks fullback Derrick Coleman overcoming his inability to hear, they wanted to reach out and let him know they were behind him.

Nine year-old twins Riley and Erin penned a letter, below, that Jake then tweeted at Coleman.

Much to the surprise of his entire family, Coleman responded to the girls’ letter with the following message:

Dear Miss Kovalcik,

Thanks for the letter. Really was great hearing from a friend who I have so much in common with. I appreciate you rooting for the Seahawks and me and hope you continue to do so when we play in the Superbowl!!!
I want you to know that I always try my best in everything I do and have faith in you & your twin sister too. Even though we wear hearing aids, we can still accomplish our goals & dreams! If you or your family (are) ever in Seattle, I hope we can all get together & play some sports or games!

Take Care,

Derrick L. Coleman Jr.

Jake is thrilled (and humbled) from all of the attention this story has received. All he wanted was for Derrick to see the letter, and know that his family can relate. Thanks to everyone who has sent positive messages his way – sometimes the words of a child can really put things in perspective.

Good luck to Derrick Coleman and the Seattle Seahawks next weekend!
