And We All Foam On Again – How to Foam Roll Like a Pro

Have you ever seen people at your gym rolling around on the mats on something that looks like it belongs in a kiddie yoga class? Do you stare at them as they roll baaaack and forth jealous that you’re getting on the treadmill because, well, you know how to use it? TA DA! That right there is the foam roller, folks.

Foam rolling, or self-myofascial release, is like a deep tissue massage for pre and post workout muscle recovery. Instead of stretching extensively, which can exacerbate micro tears in the tired muscle area, foam rolling induces compression in a muscle group and works out kinks before they become painful or bothersome. 

 Even if you’re an avid fan of the foam roller already, some basic technique tips can’t hurt to improve its beneficial qualities! Check out this handy chart from Greatist
