A GIF Account of Racing Only a Runner Understands

Running in a race is brutal. Whether it’s a 5K, half-marathon or ultra, from start to finish, your mind plays tricks on you, you experience a roller coaster of emotions and your body hurts — one second, you’re on top of the world, the next you want to give up.

It’s not just you: Everyone feels like this sometimes during a race. But it’s all worth it for that feeling of accomplishment when you cross that finish line. There’s plenty of fun to be had along the way.

If you’ve raced or plan to, this GIF-guide is worth a look (and a laugh):

You’re at the start line feeling like you could take on the world …

You’re in the lead for the first hundred meters like …

And then you get caught in a group of people filing into singletrack …

By the third aid station …

When you hear that thundercloud in the distance and the rain starts falling …

For a kilometer, you’re feeling like a total boss and dreaming of winning …

But then you hit the last hill on course …

Then, like a mirage, you see the finish line …

And you finally cross the line …

You feel proud, but you can’t find your family to celebrate …

When you realize the snack table has been picked over …

Days later, you see your finish line photo …
