10 Really Fun Half-Marathons

Half-marathons can be just as challenging as marathons mentally and physically. From super heros to outer space, these 10 fun 13.1-mile races are the perfect way to take your mind off the potential suffering and make your time on the road fly by.

1. WINE COUNTRY RUNS HALF-MARATHON
Paso Robles, California
March 18, 2018

While a course that winds through the beautiful vineyards of San Luis Obispo should certainly offer enough motivation to give this half-marathon a try, there are a few extra perks if you’re prepared to push yourself to the limit. First-place male and female runners win their weight in wine, while the rest of us settle for a pretty cool finisher medal and commemorative wine glass.

2. YUENGLING SHAMROCK HALF-MARATHON
Virginia Beach, Virginia
March 18, 2018

This popular Boston qualifier marathon and half-marathon in Virginia Beach takes place on a fast, flat course along the waterfront. When the race is over, Yuengling craft beer, Murphy’s Irish Stew and tons of live entertainment help speed your recovery.

3. THE BAKER’S DOZEN 13.1
Montclair, New Jersey
March 25, 2018

In addition to a pretty cool half-zip, long-sleeve tech T-shirt, you’ll be treated to some sweet treats once you cross the finish line. The Montclair Bread Company provides artisan breads, pastries and doughnuts to refuel your carbs and reward you for the day’s efforts.

4. STAR WARS HALF-MARATHON — THE DARK SIDE
Walt Disney World Resort, Florida
April 22, 2018

If you’re a fan of Star Wars, this is a bucket-list race you have to run — no matter your age. This spectacular course through the Walt Disney World Resort features tons of entertainment on course where you’re bound to see plenty of your favorite characters from the Light and Dark Side of the Force. In addition to the half-marathon, there’s also a 10K, 5K and runDisney kid’s race.

5. CINCO DE MAYO HALF-MARATHON
Portland, Oregon
May 6, 2018

Known as one of the premier springtime races in the Northwest, this half offers a great way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. On course entertainment and music to keep you going, aid stations every two miles and a big post-race party with beer and cider from Lagunitas Brewing and Two Towns Cider House are highlights of the race.

6. TWILIGHT HALF-MARATHON
Vancouver, Washington
July 7, 2018

For those of us who hate waking up to alarms, this flat and fast race, which starts at 6 p.m., allows you to run under the summer sunset. The Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers will also be on hand to pump you up before the start, and the post-race party at “The Couve” is sure to make for a memorable experience.

7. ROCK ‘N’ ROLL LOS ANGELES HALF-MARATHON
Los Angeles, California
October 28, 2018

This event in the Rock ‘n; Roll Series will have the on-course entertainment you’d expect, but it’s also the world’s largest Halloween-themed half-marathon. Dress up in your favorite costume and join thousands in this truly unique race beginning at the Staples Center and heading through downtown to the finish at LA Live.

8. HERSHEY’S HALF-MARATHON
Hershey, Pennsylvania
October 21, 2018

A seriously tasty race, the Hershey’s Half-Marathon takes runners past iconic locations like Chocolate Avenue, Hersheypark and the Milton Hershey School. If you’re not in the mood to tackle the 13.1-mile course solo, you can also register as a two-person relay team. Registration includes plenty of delicious samples and two tickets to Hersheypark in the Dark.

9. AVENGERS SUPER HERO’S HALF-MARATHON
Anaheim, California
November 2018

This seriously cool 13.1 mile race takes place in Disneyland Resort, where you’re favorite super heros will be out on the course to cheer you along. A super hero victory celebration awaits at the finish line along with a ‘dinner and movie’ at the after party. A Spiderman 5K and a Thor 10K are also be part of the weekend festivities.

10. SPACE COAST HALF-MARATHON
Cocoa, Florida
November 25, 2018

Florida’s oldest half-marathon, this space-themed race features a costume contest, photo opportunities with a guy in a space suit, pancakes, pizza and beer at the finish and a cool T-shirt with spaceships. If that isn’t enough, the race course is also along the waterfront near the Kennedy Space Center and has an average November temperature of 73 degrees.
