Whether you’re in the market for a new ride or just like to stay abreast of the latest, we’ve got you covered. From vintage-inspired steel to the latest dream machines, these 10 great road bikes offer something for everyone.
You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better value than Trek’s new aluminum framed Domane AL 3. This women’s-specific bike is smooth, stable and fun to ride whether you’re heading out for a group ride or racing your favorite Gran Fondo. A Shimano Sora groupset, 28c tires and integrated mounts for racks and fenders also makes it a more than suitable option for a second bike for commuting or adventure rides on dirt roads.
DIAMONDBACK CENTURY 3
With a taller headtube to take pressure off your lower back and neck, the new Diamondback Century 3 is built to be ridden all day long. But while comfort is a top priority, it’s a bike that’s plenty fast, too. The lightweight 7005 aluminum frame is sleek and aerodynamic for a bike at this price point, while the Shimano 105 drivetrain and TRP disc brakes provide reliability and performance no matter what the road throws your way.
Double-butted steel frames are a thing of the past. Thankfully, Masi has decided to dig into cycling history with the new Strada, a vintage-style frame that rides smooth and should last forever. And with Campagnolo’s Veloce 2 x 10 gearing, it’s also simple, good looking and worth every penny of it’s incredibly budget-friendly price tag.
CANNONDALE SYNAPSE DISC
Also available in a women’s-specific model, the Synapse Disc is a high-value bike that is a slightly more relaxed version of Cannondale’s more expensive CAAD and SuperSix lines. Though the carbon fork and aero tube shapes still make it plenty fast, this is a bike better suited for commuting, century rides and all-day adventures where comfort is a top priority. Disc brakes and Shimano’s value-friendly 2×9 drivetrain are nice additions for a bike under the $2K price point.
Lightweight and stiff, the new Roubaix features a fast carbon frame that isn’t too far off from the higher-priced models in Specialized’s lineup. The all-new Future Shock suspension in the cockpit provides a new level of comfort and control over harsh road surfaces that’s somewhat surprising for a bike this fast. A carbon-fiber fork with a thru-axle design, disc brakes, Roval SLX 24 wheels and the special edition Sagan gold paint scheme make this a can’t-miss bike for the slightly more serious competitor among us.
SCOTT FOIL 10 DISC
The Foil line has been around for a while and is known for being one of the first aero road bikes to hit the market. Pedigree aside, the new 2018 model is equipped with disc brakes, Ultegra Di2 and 28mm tires — all of which, along with a few tweaks to the frame, make for a more comfortable bike that performs better in harsh conditions. And like previous iterations, it’s also fast and incredibly fun to ride.
If you’re serious about going fast but aren’t in the superbike budget, the new Canyon Aeroad is as good as it’s going to get. This aerodynamic, responsive and rigid carbon frame is perfectly balanced to create a bike that accelerates like a dream and handles extremely well when cornering. Shimano Ultegra disc brakes, Di2 electronic shifting and the Canyon H11 Aerocockpit provide a level of performance that won’t disappoint even the most serious racing cyclists.
FELT FR2W DISC (WOMEN’S)
For female racers, one of the best options available in 2018 is the FR2W disc. Crafted from Felt’s UHC Advanced TeXtreme carbon fiber, the frame is incredibly stiff to transfer as much power to the road as possible. A Shimano Ultegra Di2 drivetrain, DT Swiss FC 1600 wheels and a women’s-specific handlebar and saddle round out the notable features.
CERVELO C5 DISC ULTEGRA DI2
Designed to be the ultimate endurance road bike, the C series from Cervelo performs just as well on the road as it does off. With stable handling and 32mm tire clearance, the occasional dirt or gravel path is well within reach of its capabilities, while the lightweight and fast Squoval tube shapes deliver high-level performance on the road should you decide to test yourself in a local century ride. Shimano Ultegra Di2 components and Mavic Yksion Elite Guard wheelset are other highlights.
GIANT PROPEL ADVANCED SL 0 DISC
This dream bike from Giant is an all-out aero rocket ship. Developed for Team Sunweb for sprint and solo attacks on race day, the company’s AeroSystem Shaping technology is known for producing frame shapes and angles to minimize drag. The result is an ulta-stiff, superlight bike that’s made with the highest-quality carbon available and a level of integration with its other components that you won’t see from many other models.
